The Glasgow School of Art Library has a superb and comprehensive collection of artists' books, featuring examples of work by internationally important artists such as Doug Aitken, Angela Bulloch, Olafur Eliasson, David Shrigley, Ian Hamilton Finlay, Peter Greenaway, Mike Nelson, and Thomas A. Clark.
Artists' books can come in many varied forms and structures. They are books conceived and designed by artists, rather than books written on or about artists, and are generally produced through reprographic means for mass distribution. Bookworks are a type of artist's book that play with and often subvert the book's form and structure.
Our artists' book collection is housed in the Mackintosh Library and can be consulted during its normal opening hours. All artists' books have the shelfmark 766.5.071 and are then shelved alphabetically by artist name. Details can be found in the Library Catalogue, and you can restrict your searches to this collection alone by using the Collections drop-down list on the search screen. Artists' books are available for reference only and cannot be borrowed.
We also actively purchase artists' books by our own staff and students. If you are producing artists' books and would like to see your work purchased for the GSA Library, please contact the Fine Art and Design Librarian.
