We recognise that our PhD students may require tailored Library support for their research at various stages during their studies. We offer a number of additional services to support your in-depth information needs.
Your Academic Liaison Librarian can run workshops individually or for small groups of research students, aimed at enhancing research skills, suggesting further resources for exploration, and generally improving confidence in sourcing and handling information. If you think a workshop would be useful to you, ask your tutor or research co-ordinator to arrange one, or contact your Subject Librarian directly.
You can keep track of the new books we add to Library stock by subscribing to our New Books Alert Service for Architecture and Art and Design. You will receive an email as soon as new titles are added to stock.

Postgraduate research students registered for a PhD, MPhil or similar qualification awarded purely by research can join SCONUL Access. This scheme, which is free, allows you to join most of the UK’s Higher Education libraries.
For details of how to join SCONUL Access, and for details and links to other libraries to which you can gain access, see our Other Libraries section.
Our Academic Liaison Librarians can provide expert advice on our collections and on print and electronic resources in your area of interest, and are available if you have information needs relating to your research. You can also contact our Subject Librarians about accessing resources elsewhere, both virtually or in other libraries, or request book purchases if we do not have what you are looking for.
The Academic Liaison Librarians' office is located on the upper level of the Main Library. You can usually pop in to see them during normal working hours. Alternatively, use the contact details below.
The Library holds copies of dissertations, theses and extended essays written by GSA students. These cover an enormous range of subjects and can serve as a useful starting-point for further research. We currently hold:
See our Dissertations pages for further information. There are also a number of online catalogues that can help you find dissertations and theses in your area. You can then request these items through the inter-library loan service. Hard copy versions of the publication Index to Theses (With Abstracts) are shelved in the Research Support Collection at 001.75 HYA.
We offer an inter-library loan service for GSA students and staff which can be used if you cannot source what you are looking for in the GSA Library. We can normally borrow material that we do not stock ourselves from other libraries, including books, conference proceedings, and journal articles. See our Inter-Library Loans pages for further information.
Getting to grips with the conventions and requirements of academic writing can be difficult! To make things a little easier for you, the Library has produced a number of information skills guides and resources.
From writing a thesis or research proposal, to designed a questionnaire. From producing a literature review, to referencing other texts in a report. See our InfoSmart pages for more information.
Our Research Support Collection has been designed to help our students and staff with their research activities at all levels - from undergraduate to PhD.
It includes all the standard reference works you may need in the course of your work, such as dictionaries, thesauri and encyclopaedias, along with texts on bibliographies, referencing, copyright, style guides, English use and grammar, and much more.
To support the School's growing research culture, the Library maintains lists of peer-reviewed journals in its subject disciplines. Articles in these journals all undergo peer review as part of the editorial process, and publication of research findings within these journals is therefore well-respected.
RefWorks is your personal online citation manager, freely available to you on- and off-campus through the internet. To find out more, download the ‘Getting started with RefWorks’ guide.
Student Support Services provide a variety of advice on different aspects of student life. They offer counselling, student welfare, Enlgish language support and learning support & development. All of these services are provided for free to all GSA students. More information about these services can be accessed on the VLE.
