Our subject guides provide a comprehensive introduction to resources in your subject that are available through the GSA Library. From books to journals, from websites to blogs, our subject guides are the perfect way to get acquainted with high-quality print and electronic resources in your subject.
The GSA Library holds a comprehensive selection of books on architecture and the built environment. The shelfmarks below will help you when browsing our collection. Be careful not to restrict yourself to just this one section of the Library however - there will be books in other sections that will also be of use to you.
The GSA Library Catalogue enables you to search for specific books within the collection, either by author, title, keyword or artist. The catalogue is available both over the Internet and at terminals in the Library itself.
We also offer a New Books Alert Service, which will give you notification of all new art and design books as soon as they are added to stock and available to borrow. You can subscribe via email or RSS.
Most reading list books are housed in our Temporary Reference collection. They are reference only and cannot be borrowed. The GSA Library Catalogue will indicate if an item is in the reading lists collection. You will need to make a note of the shelfmark and take it to the Library Service Desk where a member of staff will fetch it for you.
We hold copies of all Historical and Critical Studies dissertations going back to 1984. We also hold Mackintosh School of Architecture dissertations back to 1972 and Masters and PhD theses from our art, design and architecture students.
All dissertations are indexed in the GSA Library Catalogue. They are reference only and cannot be borrowed - you will need to make a note of the shelfmark and take it to the Library Service Desk where a member of staff will fetch the dissertation for you.

The Library holds complete sets of the Mackintosh School of Architecture’s examination papers, back to 1996. These are held in the Temporary Reference collection and are available for consultation within in the Library. Please ask for them at the Library Service Desk.
The Library subscribes to a number of architecture journals, from Abitare to Urban Studies.
We subscribe to a growing number of electronic databases and online resources, which are designed to supplement the hard copy collections in the Library. Our online resources range from bibliographic databases, to image sites and video, and can even be accessed over the Internet from home.
Some of our resources are accessed through Athens accounts, which are available to all GSA staff and students.

You can also contact your Academic Liaison Librarian about accessing resources elsewhere, both virtually or in other libraries, or request book purchases if we do not have what you are looking for.
